What’s the People Model?
The People Model was originated by Sarah Sumner, Ph.D. Essentially it’s a tool that helps people in organizations to relate to one another more effectively. It’s an innovative model that echoes the ancient wisdom of Plato. The structure of the model is inherently logical. Its validity is confirmed by experience.
Unlike other models such as DISC or Meyers-Briggs, the People Model has a built-in ethical dimension. Though the People Model describes three sets of people, the Strategists, the Humanitarians, and the Diplomats, its goal is for people to live above the line in all three categories.
The People Model wants to be internalized and used. It wants to be applied to daily situations and routine interactions between people. But the model offers most—it provides the most valuable insights—when applied to situations that are frustrating.
The People Model is powerful. It offers three main types of decision-making power: 1) explanatory power for increasing self-awareness and interpreting confusing situations; 2) motivational power for instigating changes and overcoming stubborn habits that have worked against the company in the past; 3) creative power for finding new approaches and imagining better solutions for the future.
The People Model is versatile. It freely goes wherever people are. It applies to relationships in the workplace, the home, volunteer clubs, businesses, government, nonprofits, schools, churches, hospitals, or anywhere on the field.
