Just How Married Do You Want To Be? Practicing Oneness in Marriage
Jim and Sarah Sumner are a couple made in heaven. Only heaven would
arrange for two people to be wedded with pasts as dissimilar as theirs.
In 1994 Sarah was on her way to becoming the first woman to graduate
with a Ph.D. in systematic theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity
School. Jim, by contrast, was a stripper. "Jammin James Brandon" they
called him. In October of that year, Jim's life took a turn. He had a
very dramatic conversion that led him to the church where Sarah was. In
1996 the two were married.
This book explains in very practical terms what it means to become "one
flesh." It also features a full chapter on how the People Model plays
out in marriage.
What People are Saying
"Jim and Sarah's straightforward honesty is compelling, raw, and
powerful."
Jud Wilhite, Senior Pastor of Central Christian Church in
Las Vegas,
and author of Stripped: Uncensored Grace on the Streets of Vegas
"Just How Married Do You Want to Be is the memoir of a
marriage--riveting, honest, self-revelatory, and full of evidences of
the grace and mercy of Christ--and a reexamination of the meaning of
headship in marriage."
David Gushee, Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics,
McAfee School of Theology
"Jim and Sarah Sumner have written perhaps the most honest marriage book
we have ever read--an honesty born of the real-life pain and struggle of
two people with very different backgrounds and personalities. Here is a
marriage book without syrupy forumulas or platitudes that tells us the
truth that Jesus works through flawed vessels to create something
beautiful."
Frank James, President of Reformed Seminary
and
Carolyn James, author of The Gospel of Ruth
"Jim and Sarah Sumner's book provides a biblical model for marriage,
enabling you to strengthen your relationship's foundation. They teach
you how to get together on the vertical, so that things will go well on
the horizontal. This emphasis on the primacy of the spiritual is
refreshing."
Barry Black, Chaplain, United States Senate

Leadership Above the Line
Leadership Above the Line introduces Sarah Sumner’s People Model. The book includes a foreword by Westmont College President, Gayle Beebe, a set of easy to read charts, an engaging and perhaps familiar story, a People Model Test, a People Model Workbook for small groups, and three full chapters on application.
What People are Saying
“The People Model offers a remarkably useful way to interpret behavior, change behavior, and chart future strategies and solutions."
Colleen C. Barrett, President of Southwest Airlines
"Sarah Sumner’s People Model is an excellent tool kit for everyday usage, whether in business or social settings."
Mike Hughes, Executive Vice President of Safeco
"Leadership Above the Line is 60 percent story and 100 percent breakthrough insights on leadership formation."
David Sanford, President of Sanford Communications
"So many leadership books go one of two directions: either offering a didactic message that appeals to the hyperrational mind or offering a narrative approach that tugs on our emotions. The appeal of Sarah’s book is that it reaches out to both mind-sets."
Gayle Beebe, President of Westmont College
"While many books on leadership acknowledge the importance of self-awareness, this one offers a useful tool for actually achieving it."
John Knapp, President of The Southern Institute
for Business and Professional Ethic

Men and Women in the Church
Evangelicals stand divided in their view of women in the church.
On one side stand complementarians, arguing the full worth of women but assigning them to differing roles. On the other side stand egalitarians, arguing that the full worth of women demands their equal treatment and access to leadership roles. Is there a way to mend the breach and build consensus?
Sarah Sumner thinks there is. Avoiding the pitfalls of both radical feminism and reactionary conservatism, she traces a new path through the issues--biblical, theological, psychological and practical--to establish and affirm common ground. Arguing that men and women are both equal and distinct, Sumner encourages us to find ways to honor and benefit from the leadership gifts of both. Men and Women in the Church is a book for all who want a fresh and hope-filled look at a persistent problem.
"Men and Women in the Church is a deep and important book with a significance far beyond what the title alone would suggest . . . I strongly encourage anyone who is concerned about the conduct of visible church life to study this book carefully."
Dallas Willard, author of The Divine Conspiracy
